With smoky flavor of espresso matched with bittersweet chocolate, this Chocolate Espresso Torte is the perfect make-ahead holiday dessert. Chocolate and espresso are simply made for each other in this rich and creamy dessert. Cocoa powder gives this soft, creamy cake deep color and intense flavor. The torte itself has lightness to it; it literally disappears on your tongue. It’s remarkable that something so richly flavored can have such a lovely, light texture.

  • 4 tbsp. Butter
  • 1 cup Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips
  • 0.5 cup Cocoa Powder
  • 0.25 cup Espresso Powder, Instant
  • 1.5 cup Sugar
  • 3 large Egg
  • 0.5 cup All Purpose Flour
  • 0.5 tsp. Baking Soda
  • 0.25 tsp. Salt
  • 0.5 cup Walnuts
  • 1 tbsp. Powdered Sugar

Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).

In a double boiler melt the butter, then add the chips, cocoa powder, and then the espresso. Incorporate all until melted and smooth. Take off heat.

Pour mixture into stand mixer. Mix on low speed with paddle attachment. Add eggs and sugar alternately mixing a total of 8-10 minutes.

Sift the flour, soda, and salt in a bowl. Combine chocolate mixture and dry ingredients by folding with a spatula.

Then add walnuts. Pour batter in a buttered 9½-inch tart pan and bake on a baking sheet for 25 minutes.
